Episode 35 – SNES Spectacular

The early to mid-nineties was what I consider to be the golden age of console gaming, with Nintendo’s sleek grey wonder, the SNES, leading the way creatively and commercially in tandem with the Sega Mega Drive. Lock in and enjoy some great sample-based VGM picks – the system’s sound really is as good as you remember! Many thanks to the Diad from The Diad Presents: A VGM Podcast for contributing a pick and some commentary to this show.

  1. This was a fun episode. You picked a few lesser known titles, so I found a bit of good music I hadn’t previously heard. Thank you!

I was a bit surprised that you selected more than one track for multiple games. Since system focus episodes tend to serve as samplers of what a particular sound chip can do, it may make more sense to try and showcase the diversity of sounds possible. Here’s to hoping you do a SNES sequel. A SNESquel(or many!).

Because absolutely no-one asked, my idea of a diverse playlist might include: Equinox, Plok(really just Akrylik, but it’s my single favorite SNES tune), Super Castlevania IV/Actraiser, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Lost Vikings/Super Adventure Island, Treasure Hunter G, and definitely Waterworld(my favorite soundtrack from a game I wouldn’t play).

Keep up the great work; your podcast is always a blast!
